MR. ED’S TIPS:

Leave the leaves?

Shall we leave the leaves or should they be raked up or otherwise removed?

As a general rule if the leaves are large (Liquidamber, Ginkgo, Sycamore, etc.) and land on the lawn or groundcover, they should be removed. Large leaves block the sun from low plants and inhibit photosynthesis so that the grass or other plants yellow and possible die. The leaves should be raked up before they get wet. These leaves can be composted or donated to Allied Waste. If leaves with red coloring are allowed to become wet on concrete sidewalks or driveways, they will leave unsightly stains. Small leaves and leaflets (Crape Myrtle, Locust, etc.) can be left to quickly compose in place and become part of the soil.

Pine needles, redwood twigs and the like should be raked up and used as mulch around your rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas. Evergreen needles tend to be acidic and help to adjust our alkaline soil. Remember, mulches should always be kept 3-4 inches away from the trunks of trees and shrubs.

Name: Otis

Have you noticed anything different at Wegman’s Nursery lately? Next time you visit, keep your eyes downward for “Otis”. At only six months, this tough-looking miniature bulldog can be seen prancing through the nursery looking for trouble. Right now his only confrontation has been with low lying branches! Like our dear cat “Convict,” “Otis” loves the attention of our nursery visitors.
