National Grandparents Day
|
|
|
The impetus for a
National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade,
a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was
to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped
to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents
could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National
Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first
Sunday after Labor Day. For 2006, Grandparents Day falls on Sept. 10th.
This
Sunday surprise those special Grandparents with an orchid, indoor plant,
bird feeder or piece of giftware just to tell them they are special. We
have a wide variety of indoor plants and gift items reduced 30% to choose
from.
Here are some additional activities
you can do with your family:
- Complete a family tree chart.
- Grandchild can "interview"
grandparent about his/her life, using either video camera or cassette
recorder.
- Grandparents may help grandchildren
write names and dates on backs of old family photos. Grandparents can
relate info about ancestors, to preserve family history.
- Visit a nursing home.

Wegman's Supports Our Community!
|
|
|
The Wegman family has been living, working and supporting the Redwood
City community for almost 50 years. One of the many ways we support the
schools in the community is through eScrip. Last year through the eScrip
program Wegman’s contributed over $11,000 to participating schools
and organizations.
eScrip is proven to be a fantastic resource for fundraising where participating
business partners such as Wegman’s contribute a percentage of your
credit card and debit/ATM card purchases to the school, group or organization
of your choice.
Here's How it Works
• You register any one or all of your existing grocery loyalty,
debit and credit cards for use in the program
• Participating merchants will make contributions to your chosen
group, based on purchases made by you, just by using the cards you have
registered.
• Your purchases are tracked and available to you online, allowing
you to see just how much you are earning on your child's behalf!

Plant of the Week - Morning Glories
|

Morning Glory
(Ipomoea) |
|
A favorite of our grandmothers, nothing beats the morning glory for fast
greenery and pretty flowers. Growing up to 20 feet, this annual (meaning
it grows for just one year) comes in a variety of colors, including pinks,
reds, purples, and - of course - the classic "Heavenly Blue."
Gardeners looking for a vigorous climber to cover a wall or trellis in
only one season will be delighted with ipomoeas. Morning glories are twiners:
they reach out, pirouetting in their predetermined, typically clockwise
direction, seeking something to grab hold of. (The plants are genetically
programmed to grow and unfurl in one direction only -- watch your plants,
you'll see.) The tendrils are far stronger than they appear. Give them
a trellis, a string, a lamp post -- anything that will allow them to grow
upward. And grow they will, until a frost stops them dead in their tendriling
tracks.
Plant morning glories in average, well-drained soil but make sure they
get a full blast of sun.
