MR. ED’S TIPS:
A nice handful of sun-loving perennials double as both deer-resistant
and drought-tolerant plants: lavender, yarrow, the salvias, echinacea,
sea lavender, society garlic, penstemon, and brachycombe all provide
excellent summer color in addition to these practical attributes.
Fertilize perennials with Master Nursery Rose and Flower
Food, Formula 49 or
Dr. Earth Rose & Flower Fertilizer.
Feed lawns with Master Green Lawn Food or
Master Green Weed & Feed. For an organic product
use Dr. Earth Lawn Fertilizer.

Quotation of the Week:
"When gardeners garden, it is not just plants that grow, but the gardeners themselves."
— Ken Druse |
The simple pleasures—time in your garden
Make a small patio a picture perfect place to start your day. What works in these following ideas is that they’re small, with comfortable seating for one or two, and they’re private—layered plantings or walls can enclose them. They’re primarily situated on the east-facing side of the house to take advantage of the rising sun’s warmth. Before your to-do list pulls you away and neighborhood sounds fill the air, take a moment to enjoy the morning’s stillness.
Picture these scenes in your own backyard. . . |
|
Plant for serenity—
A colorful tile table and two chairs are nearly surrounded by ferns
and other plants in a palette of greens and white. Nearby, a bubbling
fountain adds to the feeling of serenity. Enjoy your morning cup of
coffee or have weekend brunch in your backyard.
|
|
Plant to attract birds—
A table for two sits atop slate pavers interplanted with grass, while clematis sprawls over the adjacent shed. The space is especially peaceful at daybreak, when the air is filled with birdsong. |
|
|
|
Plant for privacy—
Spending more and more time in the back yard appeals to most but for those who live in close quarters with neighbors, privacy is just an illusion. Creating a relaxed, intimate space does not need to be costly or mind bending. Decorative trellises allow privacy while maintaining a feeling of openness. Planting tall, columnar plants adds height, visual appeal, and acts as a live screen. Alternating containerized plants, in various size, color, and shape will effectively build a wall of privacy. |

Featured Plant - Butterfly Bush
|
|
|
This perennial plant is a native to China. The clusters of tiny flowers
form atop spikes sometimes reaching 15' tall. The fragrant flowers may
be purple, pink, blue, white or red. The leaves are long and course.
Butterfly bush likes well drained, average soil. They thrive in fairly
dry conditions once established. Pinch off spent flower clusters to prolong
blooming. Plant butterfly bush in full sun to part sun. Butterfly bush
is the perfect foundation plant for a butterfly garden. The larger cultivars
should be placed behind other shrubs and blooming annuals and perennials.
Dark flowered varieties show up quite well against a light background.
Plant alongside pentas (Pentas lanceolata), lantana (Lantana
camara) and zinnias (Zinnia elegans) for non-stop butterfly
activity, and find a place nearby for parsley (Petroselinum crispum),
passion vine (Passiflora incarnata) and other butterfly larval
food plants. |
