Wegman’s is once again partnering with Dave Wilson Nursery to take pre-season orders for individual bare root stock trees. Through the SOFT Program, you can special-order single trees of taste-test winners, exciting new hybrids from Zaiger Genetics Inc., heirloom varieties, early and late-maturing, novelty and specially adapted varieties - many grown on a choice of rootstocks.

You can download the SOFT order form by clicking here. The worksheet/price list has over 225 varieties of fruit and nut bare root trees to choose from. By visiting the Dave Wilson Nursery website and you may view the fruit and its characteristics. Finally, either co
me into Wegman’s with the completed Order Form or fax it to us at 650-368-0403. Orders must be placed by November 15, 2006.

Your bare root stock will arrive at Wegman’s between mid-January and mid-February 2007. We will contact you either by phone or email to pick up your order, just in time for the perfect planting conditions.

Rick's message to you, "We at Wegman’s try to keep products for your every garden need. Every year we go to shows to find new products that might be of interest. Then, we test the products to make sure they do what they say and that the product meets our standards."

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup simple syrup (recipe follows)
  • 4 ripe mangoes
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • fine mesh sieve
  • ice cream maker

Step by Step:

Preparation Time: 15-20 minutes
Cooking Time:
about 2 hours (depending upon ice cream machine in use)

  • Peel and pit 4 mangoes.
  • Purée mangoes in a food processor; you should end up with about 3 1/ 2 cups fruit purée.
  • Stir in the simple syrup (recipe, below) and lemon juice.
  • Force the mixture through a fine sieve.
  • Pour the mixture into the bowl of the machine and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions.

Yield: Makes about 1 quart.

To make simple syrup: In a medium sacepan, bring 1 cup water to a boil. Add 1 cup sugar, bringing back to a full simmer until completely dissovled (about 3 minutes). Cool completely before using. Simple syrup may be refrigerated in a glass container for up to 4 weeks.
